Journey Through Freelancing

Recently I’ve been looking for ways to gain experience and develop my marketing skills to stand out within the job market as I continue to build my brand.

Taking these steps feels like walking for the first time, always falling and stumbling side to side from topic to topic in an effort to bring everything together.

Going through the day-to-day of this new line of work, joined with my love of music, I found a new connection to one of my favorite albums: Grey - Free Party. Though this album mainly deals with the faults of love, a few tracks contribute to the struggles of success. So, stepping into my film study days at JMU (yes, I’m aware this isn’t film… using the sort of analysis in this vein), I can see a lot of the similarities and metaphors from the introductory song Limbo in this new journey.

Within the first few bars of the song the sentiments of not living up to the predicted success is where I currently stand with the startup of freelance business, though it evolves through the time it takes to build.

Now, to be fair this song has a much deeper expression than the position I’m in, I can still appreciate the few notions from the start in my own sense, which in lies the beauty of music.

And to add a little fun to the mix the intro is on point with this as well, “But it’s like this though, I’m tired of folks… closed-minded folks… we got a demo tape but nobody wants to hear it.” I’ve always been told there’s one way into the job market… the 9-5 grind. And yes, I haven’t completely put this out of the realm of possibility. Though having others, mainly from the previous generations, pushing and discounting the possibility of modern-era work is a fairly exhausted notion in my head.

As the album progresses the blossoming of career and love is taken into a much greater, more successful picture, which is what I use as a vision.

Uline (probably my favorite track off the album, shoutout DMV lol), expresses this progress and watching others who are now in the position behind those who paved the path they wanted. This is where I either laugh at the arrogance of writing this before predicted success or hold high in the Mystic Mac-esque callout.

With all of this said, I hope to write on the other side of the grind in the light of a new career.
